Feature Requests SSL expiration-only checks

Closed

I have quite a few domains which I only have monitored to check if the SSL certificate is about to expire, I have these set to the maximum of 1 hour interval so that they don't use up checks too frequently. From another SSL related post here I think the SSL cert check is only done very 10 regular checks, so in theory this means that every 10 hours these domains' SSL certs are being checked.

I don't really need these being checked as frequently as every 10 hours, once every 24 would be frequent enough. So having it do a regular check every 1 hour for these domains is also unnecessary and uses up credits.

I wondered if an option to add a check type which is only for monitoring SSL certificate expiration would be viable? This would be set to be checked on a longer timescale of at least a few hours, likely more like once every 24 hours. If adding a specific check type isn't viable then could the available intervals for checks be increased to include options above 1 hour? With the SSL expiration check occurring every 10 regular checks then an interval of 2 or 3 hours would mean an SSL check would occur every day or so.

As a clarification of why I have added these SSL expiration checks to Updown.io it is because LetsEncrypt are planning to discontinue expiration notification emails: https://letsencrypt.org/2025/01/22/ending-expiration-emails/ They are recommending people use services like RedSift or similar for monitoring expirations but I would prefer to do this via Updown.io instead, perhaps there is a good opportunity for Updown.io to gain customers (See LetsEncrypts current list of services they're recommending: https://letsencrypt.org/docs/monitoring-options/)

Thanks!

Thanks for this suggestion, using updown to monitor Let's Encrypt certificate expiration is a good idea indeed and it has been supported for a long time. It would have been nice had they mention updown in their list but updown is quite small (and not free albeit very cheap) so I understand why it's not in their first choices :)

I don't really want to implement SSL expiration monitoring only, because it wouldn't add much value IMO (I mean if you monitoring SSL expiration you also want to be up, there's little use-case to want SSL expiration without knowing if you're down). So keeping the two combined is the best and simplest option IMO. updown's goal is to be as simple as possible in terms of configuration and provide as much value as possible for the price.

Providing monitoring intervals higher than 1h is possible though, and it's something I can offer on a case by case basis for each account depending on their use. So I just gave to your account the ability to use 2h and 3h monitoring intervals if you want for these checks :)

Best,

Adrien
